Much of the natural rainforest of Borneo is being encroached upon, destroyed, and replaced with palms that are harvested for their oil. The result is a displacement of the orang utans. These are often captured, rehabilitated, hopefully in preparation for a return to the wild.
Sepilok is one such reserve. Consisting of several thousand acres, this serves as a home for orange in rehab, as well as a large number of feral macaques. The orange are fed at 10 and 3, and tourists are only allowed in for a couple of hours in the AM and in the PM surrounding these feeding times. Furthermore, our presence was restricted to a boardwalk that led directly to the feeding platform and then out.
The nature reserve where we stayed was a short walk from the entrance to the orang preserve.
